Uh, yeah, how far back are you going here? Most of that has been around for a long long time, though some, like milkshakes, would have been in the luxury or occasional treat class until refrigeration became common. I was born in 1952. We ate all that stuff, when we could afford it, except pizza. I remember very clearly that the first time I saw the word pizza was in a Peanuts cartoon when I was about 10 or so. I had no idea what it was and didn’t know how to pronounce it. I wasn’t even sure it was food. It was a few years before pizza arrived and was available to everyone in the large Canadian city I lived in, after large numbers of Italians began arriving and changed(and improved) the food landscape considerably. I’d say, though, that as a general rule, we ate a lot less of all those things when I was a kid than people do now. There weren’t any fast food restaurants to speak of, certainly not one every few blocks in every town and city as there are now, and eating in a restaurant was a special treat, not a daily or several times a week thing, and especially so for kids. Going out for dinner was what adults did, on Saturday night. I don’t think I was in a restaurant at all till I was 12 or so. I remember also going to the first McDonald’s in our city, when I was 17, which was a big deal as it was about 15 miles from the downtown area where I lived so required a special trip. Families generally ate at home back then, breakfast, lunch and dinner all being made at home.
