Vegans and white rice?

Hi,

I got into a “debate” with a woman at work today who was hosting a dinner party at the weekend with a Vegan guest. As she is a meat eater, she didn’t have a clue what to make, so she bought a Vegan Cookbook to get some ideas.

In the front there was a section on what to stock a Vegan Store cupboard with, and she went on to tell us that the book states that Vegans do not eat white rice, but can eat brown.

I told her that this is utter rubbish, and she must have read the book wrong – maybe it said they shouldn’t eat white rice as brown rice is healthier?

Have I opened my big mouth without knowing the facts here, or is her book (or her interpretation of it) wrong?

All the vegans I know eat white rice (I think!)

White rice is completely vegan. But many just choose to eat brown rice because it contains a lot of fiber, protein, and complex carbs. White rice doesn’t have any nutritional value other than filling your stomach.

I think your co-worker may have mixed up white sugar with white rice. Many processing plants that produce white sugar use animal bone char to filter the natural color out. But they don’t do this with any white rice.
